Obituary

Virginia Harrell Anderson Mrs. Virginia Harrell Anderson departed this life Friday, Oct. 3, 2008, in Decatur, Ga. Viewing at Winnfield Funeral Home, 7221 Plank Road, on Saturday, Oct. 11, from 11 a.m. until homegoing service at 3 p.m., with the Rev. Albert Anderson III officiating. Interment in Gilbert Memorial Park. Mrs. Anderson graduated from Leland College and later received her master's degree from Southern University in Baton Rouge. She taught in Clinton for 20 years and retired in 1972. She was a wonderful science teacher who loved the study of nature and animals, especially dogs. She was adored by her students and their parents. She was known for her kindness and sweet smile. She also enjoyed reading and traveling. She traveled to the Bahamas and many times to Canada with her daughter, Emma Jean Martin, minister. She was an unsung heroine of the Civil Rights Movement during the 1960s. She worked with C.O.R.E. (Congress of Racial Equality) to register many African Americans to vote. Many young Freedom Riders, both black and white, met at her home in Clinton. Preceded in death by her son, William E. Martin Jr.; great-granddaughter, Jalynn Marie Edwards; and two spouses, William E. Martin Sr. and the Rev. Albert Anderson Sr. She is survived by two daughters, Emma Jean Martin, Decatur, and Virginia Yvonne Martin, Baton Rouge; son, Alvin Jerome Anderson, Baton Rouge; brother, Alphonse Wilson and wife Helen, New Orleans; niece, Djuana Wilson Cole, New Orleans; nephew, Alphonse Wilson Jr. and wife Donna, Keller, Texas; four grandchildren, Alprentice J. Carter and wife Malissa, Decatur, Latonya Wright Edwards and husband Arthur, and Linwood Wright Jr. and Antoinette Murray, all of Baton Rouge; and five great-grandchildren, Jabari J. Edwards and Joshua J. Edwards, both of Baton Rouge, Malachi Carter, Alprentice Ezekiel Carter and Mykeyal Duffey, all of Decatur. She also leaves to cherish six great-nephews, a great-great-niece and a host of other relatives and friends.
