IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Roberta
Rachal-Balthazar
December 5, 1926 – August 24, 2024
Roberta Rachal Balthazar, fondly called "Nannie/Sang", was born to Matthew "Papa" Rachal and Mabel "Mamoo" Dubreuil on
December 5, 1926 in Isle Brevelle, Louisiana. She was the youngest daughter of five children. She was preceded in death by her parents
Matthew Rachal and Mabel Dubreuil Rachal, her spouse of 50+ years, Felix John Balthazar, her brother Hasting Rachal, her sister Alverda
Rachal Lacour, her brother Clarence Lee Rachal, and another brother who died at birth.
She loved her family and thought the world of her oldest brother, Hasting who taught her how to tame horses as a young girl. She looked
up to her sister Alverda as "she was the best big sister in the world" who taught her how to "act like a young lady". Roberta also loved
her younger brother "Clarence" although she became a little jealous when he took her place as the baby of the family.
In 1951, Roberta and Felix moved to Shreveport, Louisiana where they raised their three daughters. They opened their home to their
parents, daughters, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and nieces. She always wanted to have a meal prepared when family came to
visit. Although Roberta was never satisfied with the flavor, her grandchildren loved her "beef meat", yams, okra, chicken with rice, and
she was known for making the best homemade pineapple icing over a yellow cake. Her parents taught her to always have something to
serve her visitors.
Roberta worked as a Surgical Scrub Technician for over 43 years at Highland Hospital. She enjoyed dancing and eating file' gumbo at
the annual October "Fair" held at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Nannie lived in Louisiana for most of her life. At 97+, she continued to
have a love for music. While sitting, she'd allow her arms to have all the fun! She had a contagious smile and laugh, and when asked to
smile, she'd comment, "I am smiling all over!" Her laughter and spunky energy will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Roberta often commented that she was ready to go home, and when asked where is home, she'd say, "I wish I never left Cane River." At
last, Roberta is home.
She is survived by her three daughters: Theresa Curtis (Eddie -deceased), Roberta Ann (Lulu) King, and Mary Balthazar Walker (Vernon),
many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, along with many nieces, great-nieces nephews, great-nephews,
cousins, family and friends.
