Funeral services for Ms. Gladys Houston Phillips will be celebrated Saturday July 23, 2011 at 2 p.m. in the Mt. Pilgrim B.C., Clarence, LA. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Viewing will be on Friday from 2-6 p.m. at the Winnfield Funeral Home. Ms. Gladys Houston Phillips was born August 13, 1950 in Natchitoches Parish to the late Lucille Carter Houston and Wade Houston, Sr. She departed this life on Sunday, July 17, 2011 in Natchitoches, Louisiana. Gladys accepted Christ as her personal Savior at an early age and was baptized at the Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church of Clarence, Louisiana under the leadership of the late Reverend Robert Williams. Gladys attended Central High School in Natchitoches Parish. She was united in marriage to Albert Phillips, Jr. in 1969. Gladys gave birth and raised one beloved daughter, LaShonda Phillips, whom she worked tirelessly to provide a good upbringing alongside her niece, Conshonda Houston Dotie who was much like a daughter. Gladys was employed at Pilgrims Pride for 12 years before becoming a child care provider for her grandchildren and three other children who affectionately call her Nanny. Gladys had a love for life, but her health concerns limited her from participating in many of the things she enjoyed. Nonetheless, Gladys always had a very caring spirit towards others and loved to smile, laugh, and enjoy those around her. She was loved by many surrogate children who she looked after and cared for over the years. She was known affectionately by many as G.P. Preceding her in death were her parents; her sister, Barbara A. Houston; her brothers, Herman Williams, Henry D. Houston, Osborn Houston, Sr. and James C. Houston, and her maternal and paternal grandparents. She leaves to cherish her precious memory one daughter, LaShonda Phillips (Daren); four grandchildren, Alexus, Alecia, Abrya, and Adarius, all of Natchitoches, Louisiana; one sister, Mrs. Zettie Mitchell (Frank) of Clarence, Louisiana; three brothers, Mr. John Willie Houston (Jimmie Lee) of Natchitoches, Louisiana; Mr. R. H. Pete Houston (Clifford Mae) of Winn Parish, Louisiana, Mr. Wade Houston, Jr. (Doris) of Campti, Louisiana; three sisters-in-laws, Mary Houston and Charles Helen Houston of Clarence, Louisiana, and Zetia Houston of Natchitoches, Louisiana; three honorary grandchildren, Christopher, Christian, and Christine Reliford who she helped raise, and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
