Obituary

Melton BB. Alexander Jr., lovingly known as Poppy (79), of Shreveport, Louisiana, passed away peacefully on July 7, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Born on July 16, 1944, in Henderson, Texas, he was the son of Melton BB and Lula Mae Alexander. Melton attended Booker T. Washington High School, where he was in the ROTC and earned a football scholarship to Wiley College before transferring to Grambling State University.

In 1965, Melton married his childhood sweetheart, and their union lasted 59 years. The following year, he was drafted into the United States Army. While stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii, the first of their three children, Tracey, was born. After serving and being honorably discharged in 1968, Melton moved his family to New York City, where they welcomed their other two children, Terry and Tonya. He enjoyed a successful career as an Environmentalist for the city of New York, retiring in 1998 after over three decades of dedicated service. Melton later returned home to Shreveport, Louisiana, where he served on the Caddo Parish Commission Board for District #5.

Melton's passion for gardening allowed him to spend countless hours cultivating and landscaping their beautiful home. He was known for his wealth of knowledge, quick wit, and a plethora of one-liners that his family continues to share among each other today. Melton was a true "Jack of all trades," capable of accomplishing a wide range of tasks in a single day, from cooking breakfast to mowing the lawn. He will be remembered for his strong work ethic, unwavering loyalty, and impeccable sense of style.

Melton is survived by his loving wife, Beverly; his children, Tracey, Terry (Joseph), and Tonya; his grandson, Xavier; and his siblings, Charles Ray (Eliza), Carolyn, and Dwight, along with a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Thomas, and Jimmy Lee. Though our hearts are heavy, we find comfort in knowing that Melton "Poppy" is at peace.
