Margaret Walker
Gatson
April 23, 1945 – November 12, 2022

On Saturday, November 12, 2022, Sister Margaret R. Walker Gatson entered into Eternal Life
with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, peacefully surrounded by her loved ones.
She was the first born child to the late Jim Walker and Berdia Sloan Walker on April 23, 1945 in
Gloster, Louisiana.
At the age of 12 years old, Margaret confessed and accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior at
the Mt. Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Shreveport, Louisiana under the leadership of the
late Rev. Walter A. Jones. She remained a faithful and dedicated member under the current
leadership of Rev. Clarence Rice. As she continued to walk with the Lord faithfully and joyfully
she served as Usher's Ministry President, Sunday School secretary, Mission Ministry treasurer,
Hospitality/Culinary Arts Ministry, Fundraiser Coordinator, implemented Cancer Awareness
events and assisted with many other ministries in her local church as well as the 13th District
Association and the City-wide Ushers Association until her health failed.
She graduated from Bethune Senior High in 1963. Also, she attended Bossier Parish Community
College and received her State certification in Child Nutrition at LSU-S/Baton Rouge.
Sister Gatson was a Godly woman and an incredibly strong woman and well known throughout
the community. Throughout her life she cared for any families and friends through
cooking/baking from scratch, studying her Bible, and helping the needy.
Margaret retired from Caddo Parish School Board with 28 years of service as Child Nutrtition
School Food Service Specialist. She also served as a volunteer for Caddo Council on Aging
Foster Grandparent Program.
Her former spouse was Philip Gatson, Sr. and to this union four children were born Cassandra,
Philip Jr., Darrel and Kenneth.
Sister Gatson was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Darrel Gatson; 2 brothers, Isiah and
Calvin Walker; and her grandson, Tremayne Jones.
Margaret leaves a legacy to her children of God's amazing love and grace: 1 daughter, Cassandra
Watson (Cordell) of Fayetteville, GA; 2 sons, Philip Gatson, Jr. (Patricia) and Kenneth Gatson
(Cynthia) both of Shreveport, Louisiana; 14 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; a sister, Debra
Walker; 2 brothers, Marvin Walker (Sharon) and Jerry Walker (Mary) all of Shreveport, LA; an
aunt: Hannah Cooper; a special niece, Destiney Walker and a host of nieces; nephews, cousins
and friends.
