Obituary

Funeral services for Lois White Shields age 60 will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 15 at Ben D. Johnson Auditorium. Interment will follow in Lawrence Serenity Sanctum. Visitation will be Tuesday, April 14 at Winnfield Funeral Home from 6-9 p.m. Mrs. Shields an educator for Natchitoches Parish School System passed away Wednesday, April 8, 2009 at Natchitoches Regional Medical Center. She was born January 7, 1949 in Natchitoches, to the matrimonial union of the late Jefferson White and Florence Paul White. She was the youngest of five children. She was preceded in death by two brothers. She completed her elementary and high school education at Central High School. She received a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Education as well as 30-plus hours from Northwestern State University. Mrs. Shields was the recipient of the Milken Family Educator's Award in 2005, distinguishing her as a nationally ranked teacher. She co-compiled a Hands-on-Science Activity Book for the Natchitoches Parish seventh and eighth grade Science teachers. She gabve teacher in-services on the activity book. She was awarded Louisiana Learn Grants in 1997-2000 and Quality Science and Math (QSM) grant in 1996. She was nominated for NSU Middle Lab Shcool Teacher of the year for 1999-2000, the Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year 1999-2000 and the Who's Who Among America's Teachers for 2001-2002. She chaired the NSU Middle Lab School Science Department and was the Science Fair Coordinator. She served on The Natchitoches Parish Science Standards Committee and was a 4-H leader. She was former vice president of the Natchitoches Boys and Girls Club, co-sponsor for the pep squad, a drug free school coordinator and peer helper leader. She was the Louisiana Regional Teacher of the Year for 2005 and chaired the SATs. She was nominated for nominated for the Who's Who Among America's Teachers 2003-2004 and for 2005. Survivors include: her husband Grant Shields, son Michael Shields, three grandchildren Tahj, Michael and Jordan Shields, two godchildren, Jason Bayone and Gloria Metoyer, brother Lawrence Seawood, all of Natchitoches and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
