We mourn the loss and Celebrate the Life and Legacy of Mr. Joshua Elijah Bryant 82, of Shreveport, La.
On Sunday morning, November 5, 2017, at Springlake Nursing Home, the trumpet sounded and the Lord summoned His servant, Joshua Elijah Bryant, home.
Joshua was born October 31, 1935, to the late Carl D. and Irene Sherman Bryant. He accepted Christ in 1948 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Shreveport, La under the leadership of Rev. J.E. Gillie. He loved the Lord and served as Superintendent of Sunday School, Chairman of the Deacon Board, Church Treasurer and was a faithful member until his health began to fail.
He graduated in 1955 from Booker T. Washington High School, Shreveport, La. He enlisted in the US Army after high school. After the military, he attended and received a BS and ME degree from Southern University. He started his career in education at J.S Clark Junior High School, Shreveport, La. be fore moving on to Charlotte Mitchell High School in Bossier City, La. He later moved to Airline High School where he was proud to be the first Black teacher at the school. From there, he was promoted to Junior High School. He became the Director of Student Services for Bossier Parish at Benton Elementary/ Junior High School. He became the Director of Student Services for Bossier Parish School before his final role as Assistant to the Superintendent. He retired in 1995 after 35 years of service from the Bossier Parish School Board. After retirement, he was the Director at the New Elizabeth Student Referral Center.
Throughout his career, he was the member of several organizations as well as being a community leader. He was elected the first President of Bossier Association of Educators, members of the Bossier Parish Drug Advisory Council, member of Shreveport/ Bossier Teen Pregnancy Coalition, member of NAACP, and Phi Delta Kappa. HE also served as President of the Hollywood Heights Neighborhood Association and was President of B & S Social and Charity Club.
He was married for over 51 years to Ella Youngblood Bryant and to this union three children were born.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Hardy Bryant, Shreveport, La. and Otis Bryant, Compton, Ca; and two sisters, Rosie Beasley, San Piedro Ca., and Dorothy Davis, Shreveport, La.
He leaves to cherish his memory: his wife, Ella Youngblood Bryant, his three children, Kelvin (Helen)Bryant, Bossier City, La, Kelicia Toinette Bryant, Shreveport, La, and Kendrick (Regina) Bryant, Fort Knox, KY. Six grandchildren, Tiffany (Ted) Bose, Kiana Hudson, Kameron Bryant, Dominique (Naomi) Herr, Jonathan Papillion, and Harvey Justice. Three great-grandchildren, Tylan Bose, Elijah, and Jackson Herr. Four sisters, Carrie Lee Carter, Alexandria, La., Lodis B. Green, Los Angeles Ca., Verline Hunt and Irene Brown, Shreveport, La. Two brothers, Carl D. Bryant Jr., Shreveport, La. and John Ellis (Bertha) Bryant, Lynwood, Ca. Sister-in-law, Margaret Bryant, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
