A retired employee of the East Baton Rouge Parish School Board and barber for more than 30 years, he died Friday, Jan. 7, 2011, at age 71. He was a resident of Baton Rouge, an Army veteran, serving from 1961 to 1963 and a native of Donaldsonville. Visiting at North Highlands Community Baptist Church on Saturday, Jan. 15, from 9 a.m. until religious service at 10 a.m., conducted by Bishop Claude White. Interment in Southern Memorial Gardens. He is survived by his wife, Alice Martin; daughters, Tonda Martin and Jacanda Martin; stepdaughters, Joslin Shropshire, Elizabeth Johnson and Margaret Jackson; son, Kevin Martin; stepsons, Anthony Johnson and Brian Johnson; sisters, Irma Anderson and Debra Jackson; three grandchildren, 11 stepgrandchildren, three stepgreat-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, LouBirdia Buchanan; father, Joseph Martin; stepson, Sidney Johnson; niece, Gwendolyn Anderson; and nephew, Jeffery Anderson. Pallbearers will be Anthony Bethly, Robert Williams, Granville Anderson, Brent Robertson, Earl Johnson Jr. and Darrel Wallace. Honorary pallbearers are Kevin Martin, Lawrence Wilson, Anthony Johnson, Brian Johnson and Johnathon Bethly. He was a 1959 graduate of McKinley High School and a member of the McKinley Sports Alumni Association
