Obituary

Dr. Joseph A. Cardozo Dr. Joseph A. Cardozo passed away peacefully at 11:20 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center. A native of New Orleans, Joseph Anthony was born May 18, 1918. Following his three-year tour of duty as a World War II Army staff sergeant, 'Joe' enrolled at Xavier University of Louisiana, where he obtained his undergraduate degree in fine arts and met Ruby. Joe and Ruby married and eventually moved to Baton Rouge, where he began his career in the Southern University fine arts department. Years later, Dr. Cardozo distinguished himself by being among the first African-Americans to obtain an Ed.D. in art education from Indiana University at Bloomington. He retired from Southern University in 1975 after 25 years. During the last 10 years of his life, Dr. Cardozo resided at The Haven at Windermere, a senior retirement community in Baton Rouge where he was simply known as 'Doc.' Many thanks to The Haven, his home health nurses, his primary care physician, Dr. Maurice Nasar, and the many other physicians and participants in Dr. Cardozo's care. Dr. Cardozo was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby. He is survived by his only child, Eugenia Maria; two sisters-in-law, a brother-in-law and several nieces and nephews. Viewing will occur at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 1565 Curtis St., Baton Rouge, on Monday, Nov. 3, from 1 p.m. until funeral Mass at 2 p.m. Interment in Southern Memorial Gardens on Blount Road.
