Emma Lee Flanagan was born on May 15, 1940, in Natchitoches, Louisiana to Rev. Isaiah Willie and Mrs. Savannah Brooks Flanagan. She grew up in Natchitoches, Louisiana. She confessed her belief and trust in Christ as Lord and Savior at an early age. She and her siblings attended Sunday School, BYPU, were active members of the youth auxiliaries, and served on the Usher Board. She graduated from beloved Central High School in 1959, later named Natchitoches Central High School. She attended Grambling State University from 1959 to 1960. Emma Lee married Melvin Davis on April 2, 1961, at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church. After moving to Shreveport in April 1961, the couple joined Paradise Baptist Church, where she served as one of the youth leaders and taught a junior Sunday School class. The first child born to this union was Deidre Ann Davis in January 1962, followed by their son, Roderick Melvin Davis, who was born on Thanksgiving Day in November 1966. Miss Emma loved her family and the joy of raising her children. She was known as a tough disciplinarian, a woman with strong convictions about how life should be lived, and a woman with a big heart for those she loved. She was a fierce protector of those she loved and a great encourager. She believed there was nothing one could not achieve. “Mrs. Emma” touched the lives of all with whom she connected in Hollywood Heights and beyond, through her own relationships and those connected through her children. As she was enlightened through the word of God, she joined White Temple Church of God in Christ, where she faithfully attended Mid-Week Bible Study and Sunday Worship Service.
Emma work as domestic service to several families for over 40 years. After retirement, she continued to share her warmth, care, and support with those around her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Rev. Isaiah W. Flanagan and Mrs. Savannah B. Flanagan. She leaves to cherish her memory: her daughter, Deidre A. Davis of Grand Prairie, Texas; her son, Roderick M. Davis, (Tara), and granddaughter, Hannah, of Cedar Hill, Texas; two brothers and two sisters, Mary F. Brown of Vallejo, California, Willie M. Flanagan of Shreveport, Louisiana, Essie R. Flanagan of Natchitoches, Louisiana, and Thurgood Isaiah Flanagan (Sharon); one aunt, Evelyn Booker, of Los Angeles, California (104 years old); her dear and devoted friend, Mr. Nero Starks of Shreveport, Louisiana and numerous cherished friends and neighbors of Hollywood Heights; nieces and nephews living in various locations across the country. Her spirit lives in the hearts of all who loved her.
