Elijah Tyson A retired self-employed owner of Tyson's Skycap and a member of Labor Union 1177, he died at 9:10 p.m. Wednesday, July 23, 2008, at Baton Rouge General Medical Center. He was 81, a resident of Baton Rouge and a native of Crosby, Miss. He was a corporal in the U.S. Army, having served in the Korean War. He received the Korean War Service Medal with 3 bronze stars and the U.N. Service Medal. Visiting at New Light Missionary Baptist Church on Wednesday, July 30, from 9 a.m. until religious service at 11 a.m., conducted by the Rev. Gil Wright. Interment in Port Hudson National Cemetery. Survived by his wife, Sarah Jane Tyson; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Verna and Berkley Turner, Evangelist Purtissa Gray, Doris and Michael Jones and Diane and Thomas Jackson, of Atlanta; four sons and a daughter-in-law, Donald and Margaret Tyson, Dexter, Dennis and Dwight Tyson; two sisters, Martha Packnett and Mildred Wattree, of New Orleans; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Ezekiel and Patricia Tyson and Saul Tyson Jr., of New Orleans; 18 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild. Preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Noah, Julio, Andrew and Superintendent Moses Tyson Sr.; and a sister, Estella McCarver. Arrangements by Winnfield Funeral Home.
