Obituary

Services celebrating the life of Mrs. Dorothy Venona Jackson Presley, 90, will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 12 at First Baptist Church on North Street. Viewing will be at Winnfield Funeral Home from 3-4:45 p.m. Thursday, March 12. Wake services will be from 5-6:45 p.m. at the church. Interment will be at 10 a.m. Friday, March 13 at Lawrence Serenity Sanctum. She passed Sunday, March 8, 2009, at Natchitoches Regional Medical Center surrounded by family, church members and friends. Mrs. Presley was born March 28, 1918, in Shreveport to the matrimonial union of the late Steve Jackson Sr. and Venona Bell Jackson. The first of three children, Dorothy was preceded in death by her brothers, Steve Van Dyke Jackson and Daniel Jackson and her only daughter, Andrea Novelle Presley Dykes. Dorothy completed her primary and secondary education at Natchitoches Parish Training School under the direction of the late Professor JW Thomas. She impressed her teachers and fellow students with her excellence in public presentation. Her natural musical talent and ability to charm an audience propelled her into the public eye and led to her winning a coveted beauty pageant at the Parish fair. She was awarded the baccalaureate degree in elementary education from Grambling College and utilized this formal training to mold many lives. Her professional and personal affiliations include the LNC reunion, Golden Link Retired Teachers Association and Women of Faith Christian Organization. Dorothy is survived by her soul mate and husband of 67 years, Cleveland Presley; three sons, Cleveland Ray Presley and Charles Ray Presley, both of Natchitoches, and Ronald Steve Presley of Brooklyn, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Derrick Dykes and Broderick Dykes and wife Celeste, all of Natchitoches, and Kyle Presley and Jennifer Presley of Kalamazoo, Mich.; two great-granddaughters, Elizabeth Presley and Ariel Elizabeth Dykes; and a host of relatives, friends, the First Baptist Church on North Street family and a myriad of students throughout the land.
