Sister Betty Jean Riley Holmes was born May 7, 1937 to the parentage of the late Mr. Jessie Riley and Mrs. Mattie Newson Rile of Caddo Parish, Louisiana.
Betty confessed and accepted Christ at the age of 12 years old. She was baptized at the Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Shreveport, Louisiana where she was a faithful member in the choir until 1957. Later, she joined the Red River Missionary Baptist Church in Bossier City, Louisiana, where she served as Vice President and President of the Usher Board until her health begin to decline. In addition to being President of the Usher Board, she served in many roles in her Christian journey. She sang in the Choir, was the secretary of the Senior Mission, taught Sunday School and served as President of the Pastor's Aide.
On September 13, 1952, she was united in Holy Matrimony to Reverend Joe Holmes. To this union, only one child was born, Alice Mae Holmes Jefferson.
Sister Holmes was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Reverend Joe Holmes; one brother; five sisters; one sister-in-law; and one brother-in-law.
She leaves to cherish her memories: her loving daughter, Alice Mae Holmes Jefferson of Shreveport, Louisiana; one sister, Versie Thomas; one brother, Jessie Riley, Jr. of Shreveport, Louisiana; one sister-in-law, Ola Riley of Houston, Texas; and one brother-in-law, Arthur Lee Franklin of Shreveport, Louisiana. She also leaves, three grandchildren, Malethea Holmes Okeawolam (Pascal Okeawolam), Daren Holmes (Sharon Holmes) Willie Jefferson, Jr. (Janell Smith) and one step-grandchild by marriage, Danielle Cook; sixteen great grandchildren, Traveon, Bre'Oshia (late), Daren, Jr., Tae-Voughn, Jordan, Sharadin, Breanna, Azana, Brenton, Kinsley, Jayden, Javari, Alyssa, Alijah, Lazaria, Daemon and Avory; one daughter by friendship, Eleanor Tisby Davis; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, special friends, Rita and Franklin Scott and Harold Golston and a host of friends throughout the years.We mourn the loss and Celebrate the Life and Legacy of Mrs. Betty Jean Riley Holmes 80, of Shreveport, La.
