Obituary

Funeral Services will be held at the North Star Baptist Church in Powhatan Saturday, August 14, 2010 at 11:00 a. m. with burial following in the Methodist Cemetery of Allen, LA. A wake service will be convened at the Winnfield Funeral Home, 318 North Street, Natchitoches, LA from 6:00 p. m. to 8:00 p. m. On Monday, August 9, 2010 at the age of 92, one that we know and love was called by God to rest eternally in the kingdom of heaven. Deacon Andrew Brown Sr. was born June 14, 1918, to the late Joe Brown and Lillie Brown Johnson; also known as mother was JoElla Brown who reared him as a child. Deacon Brown gave his life to Christ at an early age and served faithfully as a deacon at the King Hill Methodist Church and later moved his membership to the New Light Baptist Church in Rock Creek, Louisiana. He continued his walk with Christ by sharing scriptures and prayers everywhere he went. He never met a stranger and never missed an opportunity to witness to everyone he came in contact with by saying Thanks the Lord, we still alive! Andrew Brown, Sr. was raised as a Mason at an early age and was a member of Silver Column #68 A.F. & A.M. of Powhatan. He continued to fulfill his oath and obligation as a Master Mason by supporting the widows, orphans, distressed, and Master Masons and their families. He served the community until he was too ill to continue his Masonic work. Deacon Brown was a task-oriented man who loved to stay busy. He worked as a pulpwood driver but was also known for being a great gardener. He received the title as the The Watermelon Man. Deacon Brown was an animal lover who believed that Some animals have more sense than some people. His hobbies included playing dominoes, hunting, fishing, and farming. During his latter days, he enjoyed sitting under the carport talking to close friends and singing and praying at the Natchitoches Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Deacon Brown was united in marriage to the late Daisy Lee Brown Oliphant. Out of this union three children were born, Andrew Jr., Ella V., and Florida Mae. Deacon Brown was later united in marriage for 51 years to the late Easter Mae Brown. Out of this union two children were born, Linda and Brenda. He was preceded in death by Joe Brown, Lillie Mae Brown Johnson, JoElla Brown, Daisy Lee Brown Oliphant, Easter Mae Brown, and seven siblings. He leaves to cherish his memory; children: Andrew Sonny Brown, Jr. (Sarah) of Atlanta, GA, Ella V. Hunter of Dallas, TX, Florida Mae Brown of Natchitoches, LA, Linda V. Brown of Houston, TX, and Brenda J. Davis of Natchitoches, LA. Two granddaughters he reared as his own: Chrystal Davis and Carissa Davis. He was a father figure to Roy Philyaw of California and Bessie Cox of Monroe, LA. Four sisters: Louvenia Prelow, Estell Johnson, Gracie Hector, and Bessie Esters. 25 grandchildren, 52 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who he loved and cared for.
